History of Fishbecks
Fishbeck and STATS Floral Supply is a decorative floral and craft supply store and patio furniture center. Founded in 1962, STATS Floral Supply is a Southern California landmark with locations including Pasadena, Redondo Beach, and Seal Beach.
During the fall and winter seasons each STATS store is a magical kingdom of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Envision a forest of Christmas trees full of sparkling stars and twinkling lights that dance from floor to ceiling. Each STATS store is a virtual wonderland of holiday accessories and decorations. STATS offers rows and rows of lights, trees, wreaths, garlands, decorations, ornaments, wrapping paper, ribbon, and candles, just about anything you can imagine to transform your home or office into your own holiday wonderland.
In the spring and summer STATS transforms itself into one of Southern California's largest outlets for outdoor and casual furniture, statuary, fountains, quality silk and artificial flowers, crafts, candles and other seasonal decorations. You could never guess from the grand scale of present operations that it all started with violets nearly 90 years ago. That's when Dan Stathatos, Sr., newly arrived from the Greek island of Cephalonia, began selling bunches of fresh violets in downtown Los Angeles. Trade grew so much that in 1910 he opened a florist shop on Broadway, between 4th and 5th Streets. And that was the beginning of a flourishing floral business that evolved into one of the Southland's landmarks - STATS Floral Supply
Despite its growing size and number of locations, "STATS will always be a family affair," according to Dan Stathatos, Jr., STATS founder and current president. "My brother, Jerry, and I took over the flower business when our father died in 1941. At that time we were just teenagers in charge of a chain of five Broadway Florist stores." Of necessity, Dan and Jerry quickly became accomplished floral experts and solid businessmen. As the floral industry began to change, they opened their first STATS store in 1962 in Pasadena. "Technology had improved so much that silk and other artificial flowers looked real," Jerry Stathatos recalled. "We decided it was time to expand from one type of decorating to another. STATS flourished so much that in 1985 we sold the Broadway Florist to focus entirely on STATS."
In 1981, the brothers acquired Fishbeck Patio Center , a tradition in Pasadena since 1899 and one of the largest outlets for outdoor and casual furniture in Southern California, and incorporated that merchandise into the STATS format. "We found it to be a perfect counterpoint to our business - we focus primarily on Christmas and other holiday decorations in the fall and winter; patio furniture, decorator and floral merchandise in the spring and summer," Dan Stathatos, Jr. explains. "Together it all works beautifully."
